Kiera Cass, author of the highly popular Selection series, visited ISM, courtesy of National Bookstore, to share some insights about her books and provide inspiration for Middle School readers and writers. Her reflections on her life, in Middle School and beyond, helped the audience make connections to her personally and to many of the characters in her novels. When she spoke about different characters, we learned that they achieved their distinct personalities by her continual reflection of their thoughts and actions; she stressed that she always tried to “stay true to her characters.”
Cass spoke about setbacks in her writing life, leaving us with a lesson that being resilient when struggling with hardship helps to achieve your goals. She wouldn’t share the name of her newest installment of the Selection, even when put under pressure by the audience, but ISM Middle Schoolers are eagerly awaiting the release!

When National Bookstore sent me an email that we would have the opportunity to meet and have a conversation with Amy Tan, I literally jumped out of my seat. The response I had from faculty, staff, and students upon hearing that she was coming involved many emails in all caps, several personal visits to my office with wide questioning eyes saying "really?" Tweets and retweets and Facebook and questions on the staircase have been happening constantly. It is clear that the entire ISM community is feeling excited and privileged to meet the world-renowned author Amy Tan.
Her much-loved novel, The Joy Luck Club has won a host of awards, including National Book Award Finalist, Commonwealth Gold Award, American Library Association's Notable Book, American Library Association's Best Book for Young Adults.
Her other titles have all achieved rewards and acclaims in their own right. Her most recent novel, Valley of Amazement, continues to educate and entertain us weaving in a story of personal relationships with historical fiction of China prior to World War II.
Her writing is about people we don't know but that we connect with in different ways. - Mrs. Parry
